Talented South African Maskandi artist, Mnyovu Ngubane, is making a bold return to the music scene with his upcoming extended play (EP) titled Umuntu Onengane, set for release on April 11, 2025. The highly anticipated project features six new tracks and brings together an impressive lineup of guest appearances from some of Maskandi’s most respected voices — Imfezemnyama, Siyanda Shabalala, and Luve Dubazane. Known for his lyrical storytelling and rich traditional sound, Mnyovu is poised to re-establish himself as a force in the genre with this powerful new offering.
This release marks Mnyovu’s first major project since his 2024 collaboration with Afro-pop giants Mafikizolo on the genre-blending hit “Thatha Lento.” While the previous release showcased his versatility and crossover appeal, Umuntu Onengane sees him returning home to his Maskandi roots, tapping into themes of fatherhood, responsibility, identity, and social perception. The EP promises a unique blend of humor, depth, and cultural commentary — all signature traits of Mnyovu’s musical style.
The cover art for the project is as intriguing as the music itself. In it, Mnyovu is portrayed in two contrasting roles: one as a flamboyantly dressed “nursing mother” with exaggerated makeup, carrying a child on his back, and the other as his more “realistic” self — casually dressed in jeans and visibly annoyed by the maternal version of himself. This clever, comic visual metaphor hints at the EP’s theme — the internal conflict and societal expectations placed on individuals, especially men, who take on parental roles or carry responsibilities they never expected. It’s a striking artistic expression of duality, pressure, and identity, presented with satire and boldness.
